Modifications provide your customers with choices to alter their meal. They're great because they not only reduce errors (as only the options you allow can be selected), but you can also use them to upsell through adding additions such as sides and sauces.

You can add unique modifications to individual products if they relate to a single item on your menu, or you can create a modification group and link to multiple products on your menu. For example, you create a modification group of burger add-ons and link it to all burgers on your menu.

Required vs Optional Modifications

When creating modifications you will need to select if the modification is required or optional. Required modifications require the customer to make a selection before adding the product to their cart. Optional modifications are not mandatory for the customer to complete.

An example of a required modification:

How would you like your steak prepared?

With the options Blue, Rare, Medium-Rare, Rare and Well done. In this example, the modification would be set up as Required with the customer being able to select exactly one option.

An example of an optional modification could be:

Would you like to add a side?

With the options Mash, Chips, Salad and Vegetables. In this example, the modification could be set up as Optional with the customer being able to select a limit of four modifications. You might also decide to charge an additional cost for these types of modifications (or in other words, you can upsell!).

Removable ingredients

There may also be modifications you allow where a customer can remove ingredients. An example of this could be with an item like a burger where you allow a customer to remove ingredients, such as tomato, lettuce or onion. You can also change the price where you do this (for example, you could reduce the cost of the item for every ingredient removed or you might need to increase the price of the item if it was pre-prepared and you need to re-make it).
