There are three different ways for creating a tab:

1. Creating a tab for booking out space (eg, customer wants to book out a part of your venue and you want to charge a minimum spend),

2. Creating a tab at checkout (eg, customer orders a drink and is asked “Would you like to start a tab?”),

3. Creating a tab before placing an order (eg, a group comes in and one person wants to pay for everyone).

Booking out a space

This function allows the venue to create a minimum spend for a group and allows the group to order from a tab that has been set up by the venue for the tab owner.

Creating a tab

To enable tabs, go into your Venue Settings>Service Options. On the “table service” or “”Counter service” page, click the toggle to enable “Venue tabs”

Once you have enabled tabs, head to your Tab Management section and select “Create new Tab”.  Complete the mandatory fields.  You can also enter credit card details here if you have them, or you can let the customer complete this detail.

Once the tab is created, you will see it in your Tab Management screen with a status of “Await confirmation”.  At the same time, the tab owner will be sent an email requesting  confirmation of the tab and payment details.  Note: The credit card used for payment will not be pre-authorised until 15 minutes prior to the tab start time. This means you must set up a tab at least 15 minutes in advance.

Updating the tab prior to start time

Details for the tab can be updated up until 15 minutes before the tab start time. Prior to this, the venue can update the email, phone number, tab open date and time, the tab amount or the minimum tab amount.

During this period, the tab owner can also update the email, phone number, tab amount (provided it is higher than the minimum tab) and credit card information.

Setting up the tab (tab owner)

The tab owner will receive a confirmation email with a link that will provide the code for the tab that they can share with those in the group (by selecting copy code & instructions). Through the link the tab owner can also stay up to date with the remaining tab amount.  They can also increase the tab.

Ordering using the tab

When making an order using a tab, the customer simply selects “Pay with tab” in the select payment method screen.  When they hit “Next”. They will be asked for tab code (as the venue you can also see the tab code on your tab management screen in case customers forget!).

The rest of the order process is the same - except that any patrons ordering from a tab cannot leave a tip.

Staying up to date on the tab

The tab owner will be able to track the status of the tab through the link in their email.  When the amount purchased is within 20% of the tab limit, the tab owner will be sent an SMS.

As a venue you can also see the tab details in your tab management section of the portal.

Closing the tab

The tab can be closed by the tab owner by selecting close tab or by the venue by selecting close in the portal.

Refunds are not available on tabs at the moment and (if required) will be handled by MondoMenu. Please get in touch if this is required.

Creating a tab at checkout

Customers can create a tab during the checkout process. This requires no action from you as the venue.

Adding orders to the tab

A customer can keep adding orders to their tab by selecting “Add to my tab” at the end of the order. MondoMenu will pre-authorise every order before finalising the order. This means there’s no risk to the venue of not being able to take the funds. The benefit to the customer is that adding to their tab is a much more streamlined process than paying with their card again.

Setting a limit and/or increasing the limit on the tab

We will only ask the customer to set a tab limit on this type of tab if:

they initially set the tab up after an order, and they later choose to share it.

The process for sharing tabs and increasing tabs is outlined below.

Closing the tab

This type of tab can be closed by you (the venue) or by the customer. A tab will be closed automatically if no order has been placed on the tab for more than 2 hours.

Creating a tab before placing an order

This type of tab is usually set up because the tab owner wants to share the tab with others. This again requires no action from you as the venue and as the purchase is pre-authorised, there is no risk to the venue. The process for a customer to set up a tab in this way is:

From the manage tab screen, the tab owner can:

  • Increase their limit. This will be added to the existing limit and pre-authorised for the full amount before it is accepted.
  • See the order history of the tab.
  • Share the tab code.
  • Close the tab. You (the venue) or the tab owner can close a tab. A tab will also be closed automatically if no order has been placed on the tab for more than 2 hours.

Prompts to the tab owner and/or tab user are provided in the following situations:

  • The tab limit is about to be exceeded. The owner will need to increase the limit or pay another way.
  • There are insufficient funds to pre-authorise the tab amount. The owner will need to use a different payment method to secure the tab or pay another way.
  • The tab has been closed. A tab owner or user will be advised to pay another way.
  • Please note that tips are not accepted on tab orders. If a tip is applied and a tab is later selected as the method of payment, the tip amount will be removed and not charged to the tab.

You can see tab history and close any tabs from the Tab Management section in your MondoMenu portal.
